Why Is My Thermostat Not Working?

A thermostat that is blank or will not respond usually needs new batteries, has lost its power from a tripped breaker or a water safety switch, or has worn out. Change the batteries first, then check the breaker for the furnace or indoor unit once. If the screen stays blank, the wiring needs a technician.

Most thermostats run on batteries that last a year or two, and a dim or blank screen is the first thing you notice. Some models keep their schedule but stop switching the system reliably as the batteries fade. Fresh batteries are the first and safest check.

Most thermostats draw their power from your furnace or indoor unit through a small transformer. If that breaker trips, your thermostat goes dark even with good batteries in it. Check the breaker and reset it one time only.

Your AC makes water as it runs, and a small switch cuts the power if that water backs up. On many systems it cuts the same circuit that feeds the thermostat, so a blocked drain shows up as a dead thermostat. Look for standing water near the indoor unit.

A schedule, a hold, or the wrong mode

Your thermostat can be fully alive and still look broken. A schedule can override your changes, a HOLD can be left on, or the mode can sit on OFF or the wrong season. Checking the mode, the temperature, and the schedule solves more calls than any part we carry.

A small fuse on your furnace control board protects the thermostat circuit. A pinched or shorted wire pops it, and your thermostat dies instantly. Finding out why it blew matters more than the fuse itself, and that trace is technician work.

Thermostats wear out like any electronics. One past ten to fifteen years can quit outright, or drift off the real temperature. A smart thermostat also fails when it is put in without the extra power wire it needs. Swapping one means live wiring and the right setup, which matters most on a heat pump.

What can you check yourself?

  • Change the batteries and see whether the screen comes back.
  • Look at the mode, the temperature, the schedule, and any HOLD setting.
  • Check the breaker for the furnace or indoor unit and reset it one time only if it has tripped.
  • Look for a tripped water safety switch or standing water near the indoor unit.
  • Set the temperature five degrees past the room and wait five minutes to see whether the system responds.

Safety note: Do not pull the thermostat off the wall and touch the wires together. Even a low-power short can blow the fuse on the control board and add a second problem to the first.

When should you call for repair?

Call when the screen stays blank after fresh batteries and a breaker check. Call when your system ignores a clear call for heat or cooling. Call when the thermostat works some days and not others. Coming and going almost always means wiring or a control board, not the face on the wall. Call before you install a smart thermostat too. Heat pump wiring and a missing power wire cause most of the failed do-it-yourself installs we see.

Why is my thermostat screen blank?

Do I need a C-wire for a smart thermostat?

Can a bad thermostat stop the AC or furnace from working?
