Second opinion

Someone told you what it needs. Get another look before you pay for it.

A repair quote or a whole new system, either one. Before you spend the money, it is worth having someone test the equipment again and tell you what they actually find.

Asking for a second opinion is normal.

People get a second opinion before surgery. Before a roof. Before a car repair that costs real money. Heating and cooling should be no different.

You are not being difficult. You are spending a lot of money on something you cannot see inside of, and you want to know the answer is right before you write the check.

Why two companies can look at one system and say different things.

A system can look finished from the outside and still have years in it. It can also look fine and be done. The difference is what gets checked.

When a part fails, something made it fail. If nobody looks for that, the easy answer is to replace everything. It is faster to quote a whole system than to find out why one part died.

So we look for the cause. Then you know whether you are buying a new system because you need one, or because it was the first thing anyone suggested.

What we do on the visit

We check the system. Then we tell you what we found.

We look at the whole system

Not only the part that was called out. The rest of the equipment tells us whether the problem is one thing or the start of several.

We take readings

Real numbers off your equipment, compared against what the maker says they should be. Numbers are the difference between knowing and guessing.

We explain it in plain words

What we checked, what it should have read, what it actually read. If a word needs explaining, we explain it.

You get it in writing

With photos. So whatever you decide, you are deciding with the facts in front of you.

Sometimes the first company was right.

That happens, and when it does we say so.

A cracked heat exchanger is not repairable. A compressor that has failed on old equipment can cost more than the system is worth. If that is what we find, you will hear it from us plainly, and you will see why.

You are not paying us to disagree with someone. You are paying to find out what is true. Sometimes the truth is that the first answer was the right one, and now you can spend that money without wondering.

What this costs, and why it is not free.

There is a charge for the visit. You are told what it is before anyone comes out, and there are no surprises after.

A free second opinion is not really an opinion. It is a sales call. Someone has to be paid for that time, and if it is not you, it gets paid for out of what they sell you.

Paying for the visit is what makes the answer yours instead of theirs.

Start here

Send us what you were told.

Tell us what the system is doing and what you were told. A photo of the quote helps, and so does a photo of the label on the unit. If you do not have either, send what you have.

Questions people ask before they call

Is it worth getting a second opinion on a repair, or only on a replacement?

Both. Replacement is the bigger number, so people ask about that one more. But repair quotes are where parts get guessed at. A part gets named, replaced, and the problem is still there, so another part gets named. If you have been quoted a repair and something about it did not sit right, that is a good reason to have someone else look.

How do I know the part they named is the part that failed?

You test it. A capacitor, a contactor, a motor, and a control board can all look like the same complaint from inside the house, and they cost very different amounts. We measure before we name anything, and you see the readings.

What if the first company was right?

Then we tell you they were right, and that is a real answer. It happens often enough that we say it up front. Knowing the first quote was honest lets you move ahead with it instead of wondering.

What if the news is not what I was hoping for?

You still get it straight. Sometimes a system really is at the end and we have to say so. We would rather lose the job than tell you something that costs you more a year from now.

Do you charge for a second opinion?

Yes, and you are told the amount before anyone comes out. The charge buys the testing time. A visit that costs us nothing to make is a visit that has to pay for itself some other way, and that is usually the part you did not need.

What should I have ready?

The written quote you were given, if you have one. Anything the other company wrote down or showed you. And the age of the system if you know it. None of that is required. It just saves time.

What do I get at the end?

What we checked, what we found, and what we think you should do, in writing, with photos. If we say the system needs to be replaced, you will see why. If we say it can be repaired, you will see that too.
