Why Is My HVAC System Making Loud Noises?
Each sound points to a different problem. Rattling usually means a loose panel or debris. Squealing points to the blower motor. Grinding means worn bearings. A bang at startup can mean gas building up before it lights. Grinding or banging means shut the system off. Rattling and whistling are safer to check yourself first.
What makes an HVAC system loud?
Rattling: a loose panel or debris
Rattles usually come from loose screws on an access panel, or from twigs and leaves that dropped into the outdoor unit. You can clear debris from around and on top of the outdoor unit. If the rattle is inside a cabinet, leave the panels to us.

A high whistle at the return grille or the filter slot means the system is trying to pull air through too small an opening. That is usually a clogged filter or a blocked return. Changing the filter and uncovering the returns is safe, and it often ends the whistle the same hour.

A sharp squeal at startup points to a worn belt on an older indoor unit, or dry motor bearings on a newer one. The system can usually run a little longer, but the part is telling you it is wearing out. Motor and belt work is technician work.

Metal on metal grinding means a motor bearing has failed, or the blower wheel is scraping its housing. Keep running it and you destroy the motor and often what is around it. Shut the system off at the thermostat and book a repair.

A boom as the burners light means gas built up before it caught, then lit all at once. That flexes the heat exchanger, the part that keeps exhaust out of your air, every time it happens. Switch the furnace off and have it checked before you run it again.

Endless clicking usually means the ignition is failing to light, or a relay is chattering from a control fault. Either way the system is trying to do something and failing. Turn the thermostat off so it stops trying, then book a visit.

A steady hiss near the copper lines or the coil can mean refrigerant escaping. A hiss at the ductwork usually means air escaping a seam. Refrigerant work needs a license. A hiss at a duct seam is something we will trace and point out to you.

A loud buzz at the outdoor unit often means a failing contactor, a struggling capacitor, or a motor trying to start. Electrical buzzing deserves respect. Do not open any panel to look. Note where the buzz comes from and tell us when you call.

- Change the air filter and uncover any blocked return grilles if you hear whistling.
- For grinding, banging, or a burning smell, switch the system off at the thermostat and leave it off.

When should you call for repair?
Call for any grinding, banging, or electrical buzzing, and shut the system down first. Call for squealing, clicking, or hissing even if the system still runs, because each one is a part telling you it is about to fail. The sounds worth watching rather than calling about are the mild ones. A soft pop from a duct as the metal warms up. A short hum at startup. If you are not sure, describe the sound and when it happens, and we will tell you honestly whether it needs a visit.
A lot of Derwood went up in the 1970s and 80s, and many of those houses are on their third system. Each changeover left something behind: a duct transition that does not quite fit, a return nobody enlarged, a flue that was adapted instead of replaced. Those patched transitions are a common source of noise here, and the equipment gets blamed for it. Why do my air ducts pop and bang?
Metal ducts grow when hot air fills them and shrink as they cool. The flat sections flex with a pop, usually within a minute of the system starting or stopping. It is common in older sheet metal ducts and is normally harmless. If the popping is new, loud, or comes with weak airflow, we can check for a real restriction.
