Mora Heating & Air Guides

AC Not Blowing Cold Air

A warm house on a hot day is stressful, and your AC rarely tells you what went wrong. Here are a few safe things you can check in two minutes. If they do not fix it, call or text us and we will figure out the rest the right way.

What to Check When Your AC Is Running But Not Cooling

  1. The thermostat

Make sure it is set to cool and the number is below the actual room temperature. Set the fan to auto, not on, so you are not just feeling room-temperature air blow between cycles. It sounds obvious, but it is the first thing we would check too.

  2. The filter

If you can reach the filter, take a look. A filter so packed you cannot see light through it can choke the whole system. Swap it if it is filthy. If a fresh filter does not bring the cold back, something else is going on.

  3. The outdoor unit

Step outside and listen. Is the big outdoor unit running, or dead quiet? Is it buried in leaves or grass clippings? Note what you see, but keep your hands out. Do not pull covers or reach near the fan.

  4. Ice

See ice on the unit or the lines? Turn the cooling off at the thermostat and leave it off. Do not chip at it or try to melt it. Ice means something underneath needs a look, and running it harder only makes it worse.

  5. The breakers

Glance at the panel for a tripped breaker, but do not go flipping it on and off. If it tripped, it usually tripped for a reason, and that reason is worth checking before it trips again.

What Different AC Problems Usually Mean

Air moves but it is not cold. This is often a refrigerant or electrical issue inside the system. If the charge is low, there is usually a leak behind it, and topping it off without finding the leak just buys you a few weeks. This one needs instruments to pin down.

Barely any air moves. Think airflow: a clogged filter, a tired blower, or a frozen coil. If you spot ice or water, leave it alone and let us look, because forcing it tends to make the icing worse.

It starts and stops over and over. That on-off-on pattern is called short cycling, and it is hard on the equipment. Jot down when it happens and let us diagnose it instead of resetting it all afternoon.

What Happens During a Professional AC Diagnosis

Past the quick checks above, the real diagnosis takes gauges and meters. Reading the refrigerant and testing the electrical parts has to be done with proper tools and safe access, which is where a tech earns the visit. It is not DIY territory, and that is fine, that is what we are for.

When you reach out, tell us what it is doing and anything that changed lately. When we come, you get a plain rundown of what we checked, what we are still not sure about, and what we suggest next, before you approve a single repair.

Is It Worth Repairing or Time to Replace?

If the diagnosis turns up a failed part on a system that is well into its years, the next question is repair or replace. A repair quote should follow a real diagnosis, not stand in for one, so we start there. But when an older system needs a major part, or it has needed one repair after another, putting that money toward a new system can make more sense than fixing it again. Keeping up with a regular maintenance visit is also the best way to push that decision further down the road. Either way, we lay out both paths in plain language and let you choose.

Common Questions

Should I add refrigerant myself?

No. The cans at the store are not the answer. If your charge is low, there is almost always a leak, and chasing that down needs proper equipment. Let us find the real cause instead.

Does melting the ice fix the problem?

No, it just hides it for a while. Ice forms because of an airflow or refrigerant problem underneath, and until that is fixed, it will freeze right back up.

Should I reset a tripping breaker?

Leave the breaker off and tell us. A breaker that keeps tripping on a heating or cooling circuit can mean a short or a failing part, and switching it back on can be unsafe.

What should I send with a service request?

Tell us what it is doing, when it started, and anything that changed. A photo of the model label helps if you can grab it safely. The more we know up front, the faster we sort it out.

How much does an AC diagnosis cost in Germantown MD?

A diagnosis starts with a service visit, and what it runs depends on what we find. We give you the findings and a price in writing before any repair goes ahead, so you are never surprised on the bill. Call or text and we will explain how the first visit works.

"I am generally cautious when hiring service technicians, as I prefer to handle equipment maintenance myself whenever possible. However, the team sent by Mora Heating & Air completely earned my trust. When my AC compressor failed during a recent heat wave, two other supposedly reputable companies immediately pressured us to buy an entirely new system. In contrast, the technicians from Mora Heating & Air did not attempt to upsell us. Instead, they provided a practical, targeted solution: replacing only the compressor and the crankcase heater. Choosing this route saved us a significant amount of money. I highly appreciate their honesty and professionalism, and I will certainly continue using their services in the future."

"Jay came out to my property and helped me with more than I even thought, which I was so grateful for. I thought I needed to replace my HVAC. He ended up fixing it without replacement, and he actually helped me out with a window frame issue that had been causing a bad draft and a slight leak when it rains. They fixed everything, would recommend them to anyone."
