Why Is My AC Coil Frozen?

The coil is the finned part your air blows across to get cold. It freezes for one of two reasons: not enough air is reaching it, or the refrigerant is low. A dirty filter, closed vents, or a dirty coil all starve it of air. Switch the thermostat to OFF and set the fan to ON to thaw it, then change the filter.

What makes an AC coil freeze?

The coil needs a steady flow of warm room air to stay above freezing. A dirty filter chokes that flow, the coil gets colder and colder, and ice builds until no air gets through at all. Changing the filter is safe to do yourself, and it is the first thing to rule out.

Refrigerant is the fluid that carries heat out of your house. A leak drops the pressure inside the coil, which drops its temperature below freezing even when the air is moving fine. Ice on the fat copper line outside is a common sign. Leak repair needs a license.

Closing vents in rooms you do not use sounds thrifty, but it cuts the total airflow across the coil and invites ice. Furniture and rugs over the return grilles do the same. Opening every vent and clearing the returns costs nothing and is safe.

Years of dust slipping past worn filters coat the coil itself. That coating acts like a blanket and blocks the air passages, so the coil freezes even with a clean filter. Cleaning it means opening the duct housing and working around the refrigerant lines.

The blower is the fan that pushes your air across the coil. When its motor or capacitor is failing, it runs slow and moves too little air. You may notice weak airflow at the vents before the first ice shows up. Motor work is technician work.

Running the AC on a cool night

Running cooling when it is below about sixty five degrees outside drops the pressure in the coil far enough to freeze it. This catches people on cool spring and fall nights. The fix is not to call for cooling on those nights, or to ask us about controls that handle it.

A return duct that was too small from the start, or crushed in an attic or crawl space, limits the airflow no matter how clean the filter is. Repeat freezing with a clean filter and open vents points here. Correcting a duct is professional work.

What can you check yourself?

  • Switch the thermostat mode to OFF and set the fan to ON. The moving air melts the ice.
  • Give it several hours. A coil frozen into a solid block can take most of a day.
  • Change the air filter while it thaws.
  • Open every vent and uncover every return grille in the house.
  • Put towels around the indoor unit. The melting ice can overflow the drain pan.
  • After it thaws, start the cooling and watch the fat copper line outside for new frost.

Safety note: Never chip at the ice, pry at it, or pour hot water on it. The coil fins bend at a touch, and a punctured refrigerant line turns a small repair into a large one.

When should you call for repair?

Call if the coil freezes again after a full thaw with a clean filter and open vents. Repeat freezing means the cause is low refrigerant, a dirty coil, a weak blower, or a duct problem. None of those can be seen or fixed from outside the equipment. Call too if you see ice on the copper lines outside in summer, or if the airflow stays weak after the thaw. Running a system that keeps freezing can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor.

Not enough air across the coil is the main way a coil turns to ice. Add a loaded filter on a humid day and it happens quickly. Thawing it brings the cooling back for a while. Can I run just the fan while the coil thaws?

Does low refrigerant always cause ice?

Why does the coil freeze again right after thawing?

Repeat freezing means the real cause was never fixed. If the filter is new and every vent is open, what is left is low refrigerant, a dirt-coated coil, a weak blower motor, or a restricted duct. Each of those means opening the equipment or testing the refrigerant, so the next thaw should be followed by a service visit.
